SUSTAIN Enabling Fund

The SUSTAIN Future Steel Manufacturing Hub has funds available for individuals who would like to apply for resources supporting the Hub’s two Grand Challenges: Carbon Neutral Iron and Steelmaking and Smart Steel Processing.

The SUSTAIN Enabling Fund aims to facilitate collaboration for preliminary thinking around new or developing areas of research focus. In addition this fund could be used to support writing a proposal for SUSTAIN feasibility funding, but this is not a prerequisite and eligibility for this fund is not restricted to those eligible to apply for the SUSTAIN Feasibility Studies 3 Call.

Applications will be considered from academics within the internal and wider SUSTAIN network, any other UK institution, or UK Research & Technology Organisations that are eligible to receive EPSRC/UKRI funding. Proposals from partners currently in receipt of SUSTAIN funding (e.g. core funding, ECR awards or current feasibility studies) are welcomed, however these should justify why additional funds are required.

There is up to £50,000 available to support 5 applications at a maximum value of £10,000 each.

Enabling Fund Scope:

For this particular scheme, the outputs should be inspiring research in the realms of TRL 0-3.  The purpose of the Call is to facilitate collaboration for preliminary thinking to support writing a feasibility bid.

Examples of application ideas:

  • Short literature review

  • Analysis of suitable current activity with-in their departments/organisations

  • Short thought leadership type paper

The funding is to support certain areas that may be a problem/potential opportunity. For example:

  • Investigations into the problem/opportunities arising from the switch of BOS to EAF steel making

  • Development of digital passports for tracking and recycling of steel in the supply chain

  • Development of new process methods of coping with contamination in EAF steels etc.

  • Determine exposure to changes in domestic scrap utilisation

  • Identify new product / marketing opportunities for low embodied CO2 steels.
