SUSTAIN First Call for Feasibility Studies

The SUSTAIN Future Steel Manufacturing Hub is initially offering funding for three feasibility studies to conduct novel research which aligns with the Hub’s two Grand Challenges: Carbon Neutral Iron and Steelmaking and Smart Steel Processing.

The SUSTAIN Future Steel Manufacturing Research Hub is looking for research projects are aligned to and compliments our current research program. We would like to attract new partners to the project with this call for applications and have potential to lead to further collaborations and future funding bids.

This first call is open to UK academics eligible to receive EPSRC funding and is our primary mechanism to introduce new academic collaborators and develop additional research spokes.

We are delighted to announce this call for feasibility studies, the first of several upcoming opportunities to collaborate with us.

SUSTAIN has two main areas of focus which are key in delivering our vision - Carbon Neutral Iron and Steelmaking and Smart Steel Processing.

Our first Grand Challenge, Carbon Neutral Iron and Steelmaking focusses on carbon neutrality and zero waste, with aims to create and commercialise solutions, influence policy and create opportunities for the circular economy within the supply chain.

Our second Grand Challenge, Smart Steel Processing investigates novel processes and uses data driven approaches to develop practical raw material and carbon tracking technologies and supply a wider range of markets with high quality products.

The UK has a fantastic opportunity to lead the way towards carbon neutral heavy industry; the upcoming feasibility call will allow novel ideas to be investigated and provide a springboard for follow-on funding within SUSTAIN or with external funding bodies.
— Dr Richard Curry, SUSTAIN Programme Manager
