Discover Materials Engagement Event

Learn more about Materials Science and Engineering and how YOU can be part of the future

Understanding how materials behave can help us to tackle many of the most pressing global challenges we currently face - such as climate change and sustainable engineering - by rethinking how we use existing materials and developing new ones. Welcome to the world of Materials Science and Engineering and more than a week of fantastic activities and events brought to you by the Discover Materials group*.

On Monday 27th July we will launch the week (and a bit) by setting a challenge to make an infographic about what materials have helped you through the current pandemic. To support this challenge we will release videos and content throughout the week leading up to the open day (including a live Q&A session on Friday 31st July).

The week will also include a live talk by Sarah Haigh (Professor of Materials Characterisation at the University of Manchester) about the wonderful world of graphene.

We will release a video about materials that change colour in response to temperature changes (thermochromic materials) and release a video in which recent Materials Science and Engineering graduates talk about the courses they took and what they are doing now.

Our open week will culminate in a two hour live session on Tuesday 4th August which will include:

  • A live Materials Science show by Marty Jopson (a regular on the BBC's The One Show) in which he will help you discover more about the materials in your mobile phone (http://blog.martyjopson.co.uk/ )

  • The launch of our new video to showcase the field of Materials Science and Engineering

  • A live Q&A session with academics and graduates from UK Materials Science and Engineering departments and employers in the field

  • The announcement of prizes for the best infographics

We look forward to seeing you there.

*The Discover Materials group is an inter-university group whose aim is to promote Materials Science and Engineering as a discipline and the wonderful career opportunities in the area.
