Dr Craig Armstrong
Craig is a postdoctoral research scientist based within the Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI) at the Swansea University Bay Campus, and a member of the Andreoli research group. Working on Task 1 - Carbon Conversion and Environmental Pollution, Craig’s research tackles the challenge of converting the carbon dioxide released during steel production into value-added hydrocarbon products, thus closing the carbon cycle. This is approached by use of electrochemical reactors that operate under benign reaction conditions using water-based electrolytes. By development of next-generation catalysts and gas-fed electrolysers that are industrially scalable, this carbon recycling technology is anticipated to become more economically attractive in the near future, therefore incentivising widespread deployment for rapid decarbonisation.
Prior to joining SUSTAIN and Swansea University, Craig completed his undergraduate degree and Ph.D. at Lancaster University, UK. As a chemist by training, he possesses expertise in electrochemical systems with research interests encompassing the synthesis and electrochemistry of molecules and materials for applications in energy storage, conversion, and catalysis technologies.
